About Ed Campbell

Outdoor portrait of a bearded photographer holding a DSLR camera with a telephoto lens, standing beneath green trees in a park.

Photography has been part of my life for more than 20 years. After retiring from a career in the United States Air Force, I decided it was time to turn a lifelong passion into a profession and created Cattywampus Camera.

Over the years, my camera has accompanied me on countless adventures, from the mountains and wildlife of Yellowstone to the streets of Columbus, Ohio. I've photographed everything from severe thunderstorms and quiet landscapes to wildlife, historic architecture, and the night sky. I've always been drawn to the unexpected details and fleeting moments that are easy to overlook.

My years in the Air Force taught me patience, preparation, and adaptability, qualities that have proven just as valuable behind a camera. Wildlife rarely cooperates, the weather changes without warning, and the best light never seems to last long enough. Sometimes capturing the right photograph means waiting patiently, and sometimes it means being ready when something unexpected happens.

I've also served as a National Weather Service severe weather spotter, combining my lifelong fascination with weather and my love of photography. Whether I'm watching a storm develop, exploring a new landscape, or wandering through a city after dark, I'm always looking for something worth capturing.

When I'm not behind the camera, you'll probably find me watching the weather, planning my next outdoor adventure, or sitting on a lake not catching fish.

I believe photography is about more than simply recording what we see. It's about noticing the things others might pass by and finding beauty in unexpected places. That's the philosophy behind Cattywampus Camera and the inspiration for the photographs I've chosen to share in this collection.

I hope that somewhere among these images, you'll find something that speaks to you as much as it did to me when I pressed the shutter.
